Ear Training
What Is Ear Training?
Ear training is learning to be able to identify pitches and the relationship between pitches reliably. There are two major types of ear training. One is perfect pitch and the other is relative pitch.
What Is Perfect Pitch?
This is the ability to discern what a note is by hearing it without hearing any other notes as a guide. In other words it’s the ability to know what a note is “cold.” An example of this is that someone with perfect pitch could walk into a room and hear a single note played on a piano and know exactly what note was played. Like an F# or an E. Someone with perfect pitch can also tell what key a song is in or what a chord is (like a G chord for example) just by hearing it without knowing any reference pitch.
Can Perfect Pitch Be Developed With Ear Training?
Yes. It’s old myth that only those “born with” the skill of perfect pitch can develop it. Now anyone with a reasonable aptitude for music can develop perfect pitch with the right training methods.
What Is Relative Pitch?
Relative pitch is the ability to discern what the relationship is between two or more notes. This is exceedingly important as music is mostly all about the relationship between notes. For example someone with a good sense of relative pitch can tell you what kind of chord is being played. A minor 7th for example. But he will not be able to tell you that it’s a C minor 7th unless he also has perfect pitch. Someone can have relative pitch without perfect pitch (in fact many musicians do) but it’s unlikely to have perfect pitch without relative pitch, in fact as far as I know - that is not possible.
What Is The Importance Of Ear Training?
It is vastly important for musicians, songwriters, & singers to improve their abilities. You can only play, write, and sing as well as you can hear. If you can’t hear what you want to play, if you can’t hear what you want to write, if you can’t hear what you want to sing - then you will not be able to do these things well. Improving pitch recognition should be a top priority for anyone involved with music. It can also be a great thing even for those who just like to listen to music. It can improve your understanding and appreciation of music.
